Why study science?

Top  Previous  Next

Why do students need to know science? There are two answers. One is the need we all have to know about the world in which we live. Knowledge is important for its own sake. This is the paramount reason for science. We want to know because we want to know.

The other reason is to help our students better deal with the difficult problems they will be facing in the future. Science teaches us how to be a master over nature. We can change things, and make them better.

It is sad to see the loss of striving for progress in our society. We teachers have the opportunity to fire up the ambition for progress. We must encourage our students for freedom in thought, to think whatever they want, to be creative, with the goals of better understanding and increasing our abilities dealing with the problems we will face in the coming years.

This means the teacher cannot simply do things the conventional usual way. The teacher must think of the goals of teaching and strive to work with the students meeting these goals.
