University professors |
We must encourage university professors to spend time in high school classrooms. For example, spending one day a week for a semester acting like a substitute. The professor will follow the lesson plans, and the teacher will observe. Afterwards the professor will spend time with the teacher and students.
The state government should mandate that senior professors spend some time in high school classrooms. This is essential if professors are to understand how to relate to students. Students and teachers will benefit from this interaction. It will help experienced teachers become more modest and open to new ideas in their subject and new approaches.
Foundations can help by giving money to professors to encourage them to spend time in high schools. Currently the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation is spending a lot of money trying to help education. Priority should be professors in the classrooms. This is more important than more technology, more construction, or smaller classes.
