Students must fully understand the concepts of term and factor. For example, in the expression ax + b, ax is the first term. In this term, a and x are factors. When we simplify expressions, such as multiplying all sides of an equation by a number, we are adding this number as a factor to each term. This causes so much confusion that it must be repeatedly stressed.
