Teachers and students need professors

Top  Previous  Next

Teachers need the stimulus from professors. Teachers need to feel they can learn more of the subject, and learn better how to present it. Students benefit from knowing that occasionally a professor will stimulate them, and they will start thinking creatively about the subject. Professors coming to schools will prevent teachers from going in ruts.

Universities offer courses for high school teachers. Usually, teachers take such courses only when compelled. When professors appear in high schools, the teachers will be more encouraged to take positive attitudes towards these courses.

The occasional appearance of a professor will help the dedicated teacher find more acceptance by the other teachers, permitting him/her to be more creative.

The beautiful conceptual ideas of 20th century physics are not taught in high school. Instead, schools teach only the technological accomplishments. The reason is that the university physics community is failing its responsibility to society in not putting forth effort to explain these ideas without mathematics.

The reason for this neglect is the failure of university physicists to try to explain 20th century physics is the reluctance to try to explain these ideas without advanced mathematics. If they were to work hard on this, not only would the students benefit, but also the field of physics. Professors would understand things better, and the public would appreciate physics better.
