Look at the following two equations. Which is easier to read?

7.6 / 9.5 = 80%

or

7.6/9.5=80%

The first one has blanks around the division and equal signs. This is called white space. It is very important that symbols, such as equal signs or plus signs, be written with white space. Not only is it easier to read, but also it will reduce errors.

I looked at a student’s work doing a problem in class. I said, “I cannot read your numbers!”

He replied, “Well, I can read it.”

I answered, “This is not good enough! Someone else must be capable of reading and checking the work.”

The teacher must be careful as well.
