Abstract concepts

Top  Previous  Next

Many children cannot deal with abstract concepts. We have to show examples relevant to them or to their surroundings. Here are some concepts, with examples relevant to students:

Ellipse. An example is the Earth’s orbit around the sun. One textbook mentions Mercury as an example. This is not good enough. It is important to take examples from students’ own lives, and they can understand the Earth better than Mercury. Again, speak about Earth's elliptical orbit, rather than Mercury's elliptic orbit.

Parabola. Throw a paper ball a few times, so that everyone can see the parabolic path.

New Deal. What was the old deal? Do you know anyone who is benefiting?

Solving equations.

First, we must discuss what is an equation. Answer: Something with an equal sign.

I tell you two things (statements) involving x and y. You tell me what x and y are.

This is what is meant by solving equations.
